A $221 million, 75-mile-long restoration project, spanning 5 New York counties to extend the useful life of the Aqueduct.
A water pumping station at New Croton Reservoir abutting the Harlem railroad was to undergo an upgrade and the access road needed to be stabilized to accommodate the equipment required for the job and to protect a residence atop the hill. Helical soil nails were used to stabilize the slope and to minimize access issues with minimal disturbance to private property.
Project Summary:
- Helical Pile Type: 1.5″ Square
- # of Helical Piles: 25
- Location: Yorktown Heights, NY
- Installation Depth: Avg. 14′
- Helix Plates/Ultimate Pile Capacity: (6) 8″ helix
- Equipment Used: Mini Excavator with Prodig 12K5 drivehead
- Challenge/Unique Aspect: The work path/roadway was only 8′ wide so access was tight. The property owners, whose home was at stake if the slope failed, were ever vigilant to be sure their property was not compromised during construction.
- Engineers: McMillan Jacobs Assoc., HDR, CDM Smith
- Construction Mgt: Parsons Corp.
- Helical Installer: SCHIAVONE Construction Co. LLC
