The old “Philly Electric” building was being converted into a high rise apartment building with retail stores on the street level. The new retrofitted building required oversize elevators to accommodate pedestrians and the furniture and appliances that would be needed in the new apartments.
Project Summary:
- Helical Pile Type: 4.5″ Pipe Piles
- Location: Philadelphia, PA
- # of Helical Piles: 17
- Helix Plates/Ultimate Pile Capacity: 20,000 Ft lbs torque
- Installation Depth: 30′
- Equipment Used: 308 Excavator
- Challenge/Unique Aspect: The excavator could barely fit through the oversize entrance way to the atrium. A larger machine (and drivehead) were required to drive the large diameter 4.5″ pipe piles required for the oversize (20′ X 12′) elevator shafts. Twelve piles were used on the elevator that would ultimately rest on a 6″ slab while only 5 piles were needed for the other elevator supported on helicals terminating into the grade beam.
- Danbro Installer: Vaspoli Builders
