Phase III of Direct Connect, eliminating traffic congestion at the intersections of I 295 and Route 42, required tiebacks on ramp abutments. Helicals were used to supplement the grouted tendons which were originally proposed. In some areas two tiers of tiebacks were required and in others three tiers.
Project Summary:
- Helical Pile Type: IDEAL 4.5″ Pipe Piles (.290 Wall)
- # of Helical Piles: 15
- Location: Belmawr, NJ
- Installation Depth: 35′ to 70′
- Helix Plates/Ultimate Pile Capacity: 10″ 12″ 14″ 14″ Lead / 14″ 14″ Extension
- Equipment Used: CAT 315 Excavator w/30,000 Ft. Lbs Pro-Dig Drivehead
- Challenge/Unique Aspect: Variable soil conditions called for helical anchors in locations where the tiebacks were going deeper. Helical tiebacks are end bearing, not friction piles and require no grout. A 14″ 14″ trailer extension in addition to a 10″ 12″ 14″ 14″ lead was able to achieve capacity between 35 and 70 feet. Helical anchors are easier to install and test and they perform well when weak soils require deeper penetration.
