Abandoned fuel tanks were buried beneath a couple of businesses in a small strip mall and leaking lead-based gasoline. The contractor needed to stabilize the structure utilizing helical piers, remove the tanks, and remediate the contaminated soil.
Project Summary:
- Helical Pile Type: 2 7/8″ Pipe (.203 Wall)
- # of Helical Piles: 5
- Location: Ocean City, NJ
- Installation Depth: 41′
- Equipment Used: Volvo EC60 Excavator
- Challenge/Unique Aspect: While excavating to remove two fuel tanks, two additional tanks were unearthed. Helicals were used to underpin the foundation wall and to support the continuous I-beam for the dividing wall between two businesses before the tanks and contaminated soil could be removed and replaced with clean fill. The installation had to navigate around existing pilings and dewatering was also required, further complicating the process.
