The existing vinyl bulkhead for building “B” was experiencing movement. Twenty years earlier, a similar issue with building “A” was corrected by installing 22 helical anchors to arrest the settlement. Helical installer F W Wilson used a barge to install helicals from the water to deal with extremely limited access from the land side.
Project Summary:
- Helical Pile Type: 1 1/2″ Square Shaft
- # of Helical Piles: 14 to 16
- Location: Wildwood, NJ
- Helix Plates/Ultimate Pile Capacity: 24 Tons
- Installation Depth: 45′ to 57′
- Equipment Used: Bobcat Excavator (from Barge)
- Challenge/Unique Aspect: In addition to access and mobilization issues, a second older wooden bulkhead was right behind the newer vinyl one. The contractor needed to core out a section of the old wooden bulkhead and excavate to create a ditch to lay the helical on the land side. A smaller hole was then cored in the vinyl bulkhead large enough to accommodate the 1 1/2″ diameter square shaft extension. The extension was then bolted up to the lead section in the ditch on the land and the tie-backs were installed on a 30 degree angle to an average length of 50 feet.
