A beachfront hotel was adding an observation deck to a wing of the complex to enhance beach views. A deep foundation was required in this V-zone and Helical piles were specified as they represented the least intrusive, most cost effective solution.
Project Summary:
- Helical Pile Type: IDEAL 3.5″ Pipe Pies (.300 Wall)
- # of Helical Piles: 10
- Location: Avalon, NJ
- Installation Depth: 13′
- Helix Plates/Ultimate Pile Capacity: 10″/12″/14″
- Equipment Used: BobCat Mini Excavator with 12.5K & 25K Digga Driveheads
- Challenge/Unique Aspect: The geotech report called for a three helices lead to a deepth of 17′. However, the Installer, Coastal Marine, could not get the piles down past 13′ even when switching to a 25K drivehead. A consultation with Danbro and the Structural Engineer (Steve Gencorelli) confirmed that both the necessary torque (17,000 Ft. lbs.) and the scouring deepth were both achieved at 13′.
