One hundred and thirty-four helicals were installed in clusters to support pile caps, columns and grade beams for an expansion of a fire house in Avalon NJ. A load test was conducted to pick the pile that performed the best in obtaining capacity at the shallowest depth.

Project Summary:

  • Helical Pile Type: 2 7/8″ Pipe Pile w/.276 wall
  • # of Helical Piles: 134
  • Location: Avalon, NJ
  • Installation Depth: 15′ to 20′
  • Helix Plates/Ultimate Pile Capacity: 80 Kips
  • Equipment Used: John Deere 308 Excavator
  • Challenge/Unique Aspect: The Fire House was in a busy municipal complex with a school, library and administrative buildings. Mobilization and vibration issues associated with timber piles were the driving force in the selection of helicals which alleviated these site concerns.
