304 Johnson Ave (Hale Built)

H-Piles were installed for the foundation for a new building three feet from an existing, older, 4-story brick structure. The installation of piles caused the existing building to settle. Rack bracing, to stabilize the structure was hastily installed but a long term, permanent solution was needed to keep the old brick foundation from failing. Helical Pipe piles with heavy duty underpinning brackets were installed to arrest the settlement and allow the new construction to proceed.

Project Summary:

  • Helical Pile Type: IDEAL 4.5″ Pipe Piles
  • # of Helical Piles: 20
  • Location: Jersey City, NJ
  • Installation Depth: 55′
  • Helix Plates/Ultimate Pile Capacity: 10″ 12″ 14″ / 50 Ton Ultimate
  • Equipment Used: Volvo 58 Excavator
  • Challenge/Unique Aspect: Access was difficult. Overhead issues limited the leads to 7′ and then 5′ extensions to follow to achieve capacity (50 Tons) at 55′. Mobilization was hampered by the existing H-piles and rack bracing. A high water table and collapsing soil from the excavation to below the footer requiring constant dewatering throughout the installation.
