20 Riverleigh Avenue

A new 3 story doctors office building was being constructed on a main Street in Riverhead, New York. A soil investigation showed that the weak sandy and silty soils would not support a slab on grade foundation for a building of that size. Due to the close proximity of neighboring buildings, driven piles were out of the question. Helical Piles were selected as the deep foundation element most suited for this project and installed by local contractor Shore Marine.

Project Summary:

  • Helical Pile Type: 1.5″ Square Lead Transitioning to 2875 Pipe
  • # of Helical Piles: 145
  • Location: Riverhead, NY
  • Installation Depth: 25′ to 35′
  • Equipment Used: Komatsu Excavator, 12K drive head, marian torque indicator
  • Challenge/Unique Aspect: A square shaft lead section transitioning to pipe was the perfect solution for this job. The square shaft lead section was able to achieve torque at a lesser depth due to the different KT value of the square shaft resulting in a less expensive pile. The pipe pile extensions dealt with lateral support needed in the soft surface soils above.
