Helicals were selecteded as both the material, and the installation methodology, were environmentally friendly for two pedestrian bridges linking trails through Park wetlands. Access to the South bridge required specialized equipment (Spider Crane) and a Skinny barge to facilitate construction in a tight area. The crane consisted of a custom fabricated jib mount with a 15′ reach and a custom spec power pack to run it.
Project Summary:
- Helical Pile Type: 3″ Pipe Piles 8″ 10″ 12″ Lead
- # of Helical Piles: 20
- Location: Honeoye, NY
- Installation Depth: 25′ to 35′
- Helix Plates/Ultimate Pile Capacity: 20 K Ultimate
- Equipment Used: Spider Crane with a custum fabricated mount & a custom spec power pack
- Challenge/Unique Aspect: Logistics influenced the decesion to go helical on this project. Access to the bridge site on the South side was extremely limited and a narrow “skinny barge” transpoted in segments and then reassembled with a unique “Spider Crane” Installer required to install the piles. Care needed be taken to minimize disturbance to the wetlands.
