The apartments were built on piles, but the slab-on-grade was not. The first floor SOG started settling drastically due to the FILL layers below. In some instances, the differential settlement was 8″ or more. To make the situation worse, the original contractors poured another slab on top of the SOG to try and solve the issue. Unfortunately, this made the slab settle more due to the additional weight. Helical piles were the premier choice to be used to help support the slab and end the settling.
